Giant Killers

The Men of Marlboro have been become known as the team that will beat you with the Home Run. No lead is ever safe because they are very capable of hitting the four-bagger at any given time. When Marlboro hits the round tripper it usually is not an accident, but rather a strategy.

Despite having no titles to boast about just yet, the team has pulled off two major upsets during the current decade. Snookie Ward, one of their most colorful characters, likes to reminisce about how the 2000 team knocked off the regular season champions Little Britain Grange 8 years ago in the opening round of the playoff. Well once again, this year the Men of Marlboro duplicated that exact same feat by topping the regular season champions Little Britain this season by virtue of a 2-0 sweep in the opening round of the 2008-09 playoffs. Surprisingly, Marlboro only belted 2 homers in that playoff series.

An initial trip to the Series is certainly in their future. Captain Jack Earley has been a member of the team for seven years. He replaced their former captain John Lutz. A couple of their key players of the past have passed away including the beloved Gary Atkins & another former Captain George Mackey. The current nucleus of the team has been intact for about 6 years. Marlboro has one of the larger rosters in the league and often show up with 11 or 12 man lineups. A strategy that some more competitive teams shy away from doing.

The team formed originally as a unit made up of primarily with residents of the small town of Marlboro. Carl DiDonato is one of their hometown veteran players who formerly played for the St. Patrick's Team. The Marlboro team has bounced around and played at several locations over the years. Locations have included St Mary's in Marlboro, Marlboro Middle School & Marlboro High School until moving southward to their new home at the Fostertown United Methodist Church this year.
