A warm welcome to Corey Smith, one of the newest stars of the Wombat Wiffleball League, and one of the early favorites for the 2005 Rookie of the Year award.
Corey's coming to the Occupational Hazard team this past March was hailed as a master stroke by team Captain Chris Monroe. By getting the exciting and colorful Smith, the Occupational Hazards picked up an established competitor and a player of quality, ready to step into the lineup and play a big role in the fortunes of 2005.
After a brief one game stint in 2004, in which Smith recorded his first career triple, Corey practiced in the off-season and came back determined to excel beyond all expectation in his first full season.
The early results have proven that Smith is indeed a totally competitive, totally absorbed player intent on focusing to improve every aspect of his game. And after just 8 games, Corey (sometimes mistaken for the son of Mr. Bean) was leading the league in fielding plays, pitching victories and was among the league leaders in hits, doubles, triples and RBI.
As for Mr. Monroe's pre-season selection of Corey Smith above other more experienced players - things went his way. And Corey is happy to continue his climb up all the statistical ladders he can!
