About This Project:
The goal of this League History project was to record the various eras of the sport of wiffleball as they have evolved over the last 25 years. I've also attempted to capture some of the unique times and personalities that have helped make the league a fun one to be a part of.

The Wombat Wiffleball League really has had three distinct eras: The Pre-League Era (1977-1988); The Friendship Era (1989-2000) and The Competitive Era (2001-present). Even the name of the league has changed over the years. From 1977-1987, it had no name. From 1988-1994 it was called The Senstitive Yet Studlike Men's Wiffleball League. The name changed in 1995 to the Maybrook League, and then on July 4th, 2002 - five years ago - it took on it's current: Wombat Wiffleball League.

Most of us, as kids, had a particular baseball icon that we admired ... wanted to grow up to be someday. Often we attempted to emulate them. I remember back in 1978 Richard Roman idolized the hard-nosed and dynamic Pete Rose. While I spent hours pretending to be a smallish lefty home run hitter: Bobby Murcer of the Yankees. Rich would often dive into the ground to make spectacular fielding plays, while I would loft the ball into the forest behind his home - homers to the Yankee Stadium porch.

But seldom do we become that which we aspire to be. But we never stop trying, playing or dreaming. And wiffleball has become this soul's affordable and achievable dream. I've now plastered over 2,500 pitches over the right field wall and I imagine Murcer might be proud.

Early on the stat keeping was not that good. In fact, almost no statistics remain from 1977-1988. Mike (picture on right) and Rich Roman ruled the roost back in the mid-70's. And people like Sean Hopkins (pictured left) who had great eye hand coordination, a good hands and could spray the ball to all fields, played before the League became fully organized as well. Trying to compare his performances to those of today's players is virtually impossible. Hopkins did have the nicest 1980's heavy metal hair though, and he shall forever remain 'Blondfur'. Because of this lack of recorded information, the current league history on this website begins in 1994.
